What is a Safety Harness?
A safety harness is typically a form of protective gear specifically designed to prevent injury or death to an individual, animal or other entity. The harness itself is typically fabric-based and is made from rope, chain or webbing and usually includes locking safety hardware. The purpose of the safety harness in this instance is to prevent the possibility of the suffocation of an individual from being able to free themselves from an unsafe situation. A common example would be the use of a safety harness for the airline pilot and cabin crew.
Safety harnesses are typically used by individuals working at heights or in hazardous conditions and have been utilized in this instance since their inception. Workers such as electricians, plumbers, landscapers, firefighters, maintenance workers and mechanics have all been seen wearing some form of safety harness. Common examples of safety harnesses would be the safety harness for the airline pilot and cabin crew, fireman, mountain climbers, mechanics and agricultural workers. Additionally, this type of safety gear is also used by those involved in the medical field such as doctors, nurses and emergency personnel. This is because the use of this gear may prevent the severity of injury to individuals if they are unable to effectively reach safety.
When a worker is required to wear a safety harness, there are several different types that the worker may need to wear depending upon the nature of their job. Some types of these harnesses include the basic slip-resistant belt harness, the adjustable belt harness, the hard-fitted waist belt harness, the front-back harness, and the front-back harness and many more types. In some instances, the safety harness will be made of a material that allows the wearer to be able to easily slip over the belt and then use a chin strap to safely pull the belt over the head and back. This type of harness would often be used by the trucking and construction industries. It has proven to be an excellent method of ensuring that workers remain safe in the event of serious mishaps on the work-site.
